Olhar da RochaPassagem dos Olhos, Pedra da Gávea
A traverse across the eyes of the Emperor's Head, 800 metres above the sea.
Rio's toughest classic hike, with a scramble up the Carrasqueira and an abseil on the way down.
At 844 metres, Pedra da Gávea is one of the tallest mountains rising straight from the sea anywhere in the world. The climb starts in Barrinha and crosses the Atlantic Forest of Tijuca National Park over roots, rocks and steep sections. Near the top is the Carrasqueira, a rock face we climb with rope, harness and helmet. From the summit you can see from Copacabana to Barra da Tijuca.
The rock at the top has shapes that look like a face, the Emperor's Head, and markings that fed a decades-old legend about a Phoenician inscription. Your guide tells these stories on the way up.
