About this experience
Ilha Grande sits in the Angra dos Reis bay, with most of its land protected as parks and reserves. There are no cars: everything is on foot or by boat. We leave Rio early, take the boat across to the island and come back at the end of the day.
The island has history too: it was a quarantine station for immigrants in the 19th century and held a prison until 1994. The ruins and the aqueduct are along one of the trails.
