Olhar da CidadeSanta Teresa and Lapa by Tram
The yellow tram over the Arches, artists' studios and the Selarón Steps.
From the Imperial Palace to Pedra do Sal, where samba was born.
We start at Praça XV and the Imperial Palace, where the Portuguese royal family held court after 1808. Then the Royal Portuguese Reading Room, the Municipal Theatre and coffee at Confeitaria Colombo, open since 1894. By light rail we head to the port area: the Museum of Tomorrow, Valongo Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Pedra do Sal, the cradle of samba.
Valongo Wharf was the largest landing point for enslaved Africans in the Americas. Your guide tells that story, and the story of the Black community that, in Little Africa, created samba, the terreiros and the music circles that still meet today.
